Join the Gen i Revolution

One of the books that we use a lot as a reference point for teachers is Learning, Earning and Investing. EconomicsWisconsin uses it mainly to educate teachers on the Stock Market in use for our Stock Market Simulation. Also a variety of our workshops cover a topic, activity or lesson from the LEI. It is a great reference and teaching tool.

The Council on Economic Education has yet another great resource that goes along with the lesson plans from the LEI. It is the Gen i Revolution. This free, online game consists of fifteen interactive missions in which students complete a variety of activities to help them learn important personal finance concepts. Within each mission, students are introduced to a character who is facing a particular financial crisis. As a part of the Gen i Revolution, the student learns about the crisis, strategically selects “Operatives”, and then completes activities with the ultimate goal of solving the mission.

This game is geared towards 6th - 12th graders and each "mission" (there are 15 in all) takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Fall is Right Around the Corner

Here in Wisconsin it seems like Summer just appeared here and it is hard to talk about the Fall. But we must.

EconomicsWisconsin has a great fall line up for you!

Starting off in LaCrosse, WI on September 30. Then off to Green Bay, WI at Lambeau Field on October 14 and then off to Lake Geneva to enjoy the fall colors on the grounds of Geneva National on the 21st of October.

Summer Stock Market Simulation Challenge

We have been asked this question repeatedly since the end of the school year. Teachers that are either teaching a summer econ course or just are running a summer fun class are looking for a version of our Stock Market Simulation to play with their kids.

StockTrak, the company that runs our School Year SMS Challenges has a free version that you can play with your students during the summer months. It is very similar to the WisconsinSMS.com. the site is called Wall Street Survivor and can be found here.

If you are unsure how to play the SMS - we do offer a free Workshop on the basics of the Stock Market and how to play this simulation. The workshop is on Monday, September 26th at the Northwestern Mutual building in Franklin, Wisconsin. The workshop starts at 8 AM and lasts until 3 PM.

Money, Money, Honey Bunny!

One statement that is heard often and said many times during EconomicsWisconsin's workshops and confrences is to "Start Early" with teching kids personal finance.

Anyone with young children can attest to their ability to catch on very quickly to concepts that interest them. One of the ways to reach out to them is via books. Money, Money, Honey Bunny is perfect for preschool through fourth graders. The book is reasonably priced and can be found in most local libraries or via Amazon.

What makes this story even better is the fun lesson plans! A quick search found the lesson plan on many different websites. Here is the link on the Philadelphia Fed and more information on FederalReserveEducation.org. There are some reviews on the lesson at EconEdReviews.org as well. And this is just a starting point. From here you can talk more about saving and spending. About piggy banks and "regular" banks where mom and dad put their money. And about giving to charity. These are all great lessons and an great entry into personal finance and economic literacy.

If you have ever attended an EconomicsWisconsin workshop or even, each folder is stuff with useful information. One item that I want to draw attention to is GATE.

GATE is a global membership organization sponsored by the Council for Economic Education exclusively for K-12 teachers and others who are interested in economic, financial and entrepreneurship education.

The BEST part of GATE is that it is free. Yes. Free.

By joining GATE you receive newsletters, web newsletters, discounts on CEE Materials (books, DVDs and so on) and half price on CEE conferences.

So dig through your old EW conference materials and look for the postcard or you can sign up online.
